Paul Tappenden – bio

Tappenden’s career has taken many different paths and diversions from printmaking to watercolors, to oil paintings and acrylics, pen and ink drawings and portraits.

He has painted many different subjects, but has developed a local reputation for his paintings of the Hudson Valley, and the quaint Victorian Village of Nyack, where he has lived for 30 years.

During the past couple of years, Tappenden has worked to develop a new technique, called fresco découvrir, which bridges the gap between painting and traditional fresco.

In his latest work, he refers back to his European beginnings, with scenes that capture the old world peace and beauty that makes us yearn for simpler times.

He studied as a painter in England, coming to New York in the mid-seventies, where he began a career as a printmaker, creating several editions of etchings, which found a ready national market.

In 1979, he started working in the entertainment industry, painting for Broadway, TV and over fifty movies.  He also worked as a muralist, using his specialized talents in the movies such as Cotton Club and Legal Eagles. His clients have included The Plaza Hotel, Essex House, Ralph Loren, Old Navy and the Whitney Estate, as well as venues throughout the Tri-state area and beyond.  His mural work has appeared in Architectural Digest, Town and Country and many other publications.

As a fine artist, Tappenden has received numerous awards and much acclaim from sources including the New York State Legislature.  He has also been active in the NY arts community as a curator, organizer and consultant.

His studio is located at the Garnerville Arts & Industrial Center, in Garnerville, New York, an active and vital arts community, which has been referred to as a regional arts Mecca by Gannet Newspapers.  Much of this is no doubt due to Tappenden’s influence and contributions.
